Football Game – GCC @ MCC 1st HALF 10-27-18

TODAY’S GAME IS BROUGHT TO
YOU BY MARICOPA COMMUNITY COLLEGES, WHERE YOUR
EDUCATION AND SUCCESS COMES FIRST; BY MESA
COMMUNITY COLLEGE, DECLARE SUCCESS YOUR MAJOR, IT’S
ALL AT MCC; BY GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE, ENROLL
TODAY AND MAKE LIFE HAPPEN; BY COX
COMMUNICATIONS, YOUR FRIEND IN THE DIGITAL
AGE; AND BY MCTV, MARICOPA COLLEGE’S TELEVISION,
WE’RE PLUGGED IN TO WHAT’S HAPPENING AT YOUR
MARICOPA COLLEGE. PLEASANT GOOD
EVENING TO EVERYBODY. WELCOME TO THE JOHN D. RIGGS
STADIUM. WE ARE ON THE CAMPUS OF
MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE. TONIGHT, NATIONAL JUNIOR
COLLEGE FOOTBALL AS THE GLENDALE GAUCHOS LED BY
HEAD COACH MICHAEL BELL, 1-7 BY WAY OF RECORD. THEY’LL BE TAKING ON
THE HOST TEAM, THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS, WHO COME
WITH A 3-3 RECORD, AND THEY’RE LED BY THEIR
6TH-YEAR HEAD COACH RYAN FELKER. AND ALONGSIDE THE HALL
OF FAMER JOE KERSTING. I’M JEFF LOWERY. WELCOME TO MCTV SPORTS. CURRENTLY MESA AND
SCOTTSDALE, RIGHT UP THERE AT THE TOP, BATTLING FOR
A VALLEY OF THE SUN BOWL. BOTH TEAMS ARE 1-2. YEAH, COACH FELKER HAS
DONE A GREAT JOB HERE AT MESA. THEY’LL REALLY TURNED
THIS PROGRAM AROUND. SEVERAL YEARS IN A ROW
THEY WERE UNDER 500 PRIOR TO HIM BEING HIRED. HE’S BROUGHT GREAT
STABILITY TO THE PROGRAM AND GOT THEM TO A COUPLE
OF VALLEY OF THE SUN BOWLS. AND OBVIOUSLY THEY WOULD
LOVE TO FINISH OFF THIS SEASON THE SAME WAY. WELL, AS WE MENTIONED,
MESA COMING IN WITH A RECORD OF 3-3. BOTH TEAMS HAD A BUY WEEK
LAST WEEK, BUT BOTH TEAMS ARE COMING OFF BIG LOSSES. NOW REMEMBER WE HAD THAT
BIG RAIN TWO WEEKS AGO. AND THAT CANCELLED
MESA VERSUS PIMA HERE. AND SO THEIR LAST GAME HAS
ACTUALLY BEEN THREE WEEKS AGO, WHEN THEY LOST BIG. THEY GAVE UP OVER
60 POINTS TO SNOW. SAME THING FOR GLENDALE,
THEY LOSE 66-6. ONE OF THE WORST LOSSES
IN GAUCHO HISTORY. WELL, THESE TWO TEAMS,
JOE, COMBINED FOR 5 NATIONAL TITLES, OF
COURSE, YOU WERE A PART OF ALL 3 FOR GLENDALE BACK
IN ’88, 2000, AND 2005. WE MAY BE ON THE BRINK OF,
YOU KNOW, NO MORE FOOTBALL AT THE JUNIOR COLLEGE
LEVEL IN ARIZONA, BUT, YOU KNOW, THESE TEAMS ARE
PLAYING FOR PRIDE. AND, YOU KNOW, REALLY ANYTHING
CAN HAPPEN HERE TONIGHT. WELL, THESE ATHLETES HAVE
A CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDER. WHEN THEY GO TO A JUNIOR
COLLEGE, IT’S TYPICALLY BECAUSE THEY’VE BEEN
OVERLOOKED OR HAVEN’T GOTTEN TO THE OPPORTUNITY
TO GET TO UNIVERSITY. SO THEY’VE GOT SOMETHING
TO PROVE INDIVIDUALLY, AS WELL AS A TEAM
THROUGHOUT THIS SEASON. ALL RIGHT. AT THIS TIME LET’S
BRING IN MIKE CAROTENUTO DOWN ON THE SIDELINE. YEAH, THANKS A LOT, JEFF. YOU AND COACH
HITTING ON IT. SO THAT PIMA GAME, IT’S
NOT GOING TO COUNT. SCOTTSDALE IS TAKING THEIR PIMA
GAME OFF THEIR RECORD. AND MESA, OBVIOUSLY, WITH
THE CANCELLATION, NOT MAKING UP THE GAME. THERE WAS TALK THEY COULD
HAVE MADE IT UP, BUT PIMA HAVING A CONTRACT WITH AIR
FORCE PREP, SO THAT’S WHY THEY KEPT THE GAME
WITH AIR FORCE PREP. AND MESA WASN’T
ABLE TO PLAY THEM. BUT WE TALK ABOUT THIS,
COACH FELKER SINCE 2016, GUYS, AGAINST THE ACCAC,
11-4 AS A CONFERENCE RECORD. ALL TIME THOUGH AGAINST
PIMA, GUYS, AS A SIDE NOTE, MAYBE THIS IS WHY
PIMA DIDN’T WANT TO PLAY THE GAME, IN HIS WHOLE IN
THE CONFERENCE, HE’S NEVER LOST TO PIMA, GUYS. 15-0. SO MESA LOOKING TO GO BACK
TO THE VALLEY OF THE SUN BOWL FOR THE THIRD
STRAIGHT YEAR. AND COACH, I KNOW IT’S ONE
GAME AT A TIME, SCOTTSDALE WON 3 STRAIGHT
YEARS AT GLENDALE. WE KNOW YOU GUYS HAVE
DONE IT BEFORE, GOING 4 STRAIGHT YEARS. MESA LOOKING TO GO
3 STRAIGHT YEARS. AGAIN, GREAT JOB
BY COACH FELKER. AND WE’LL SEE WHAT
THEY CAN DO TONIGHT. ALL RIGHT. AROS GETTING SET TO KICK
— RATHER JARED STANGLER, THE LEFT-FOOTED KICKER. AND IT’S A SHORT
POOCH KICK. IT’S GOING TO LAND
RIGHT AROUND THE 36. IT BOBBLED AROUND. AND LET’S SEE WHO
CAME UP WITH IT. IT’S A SCRUM, RIGHT AROUND
THE GLENDALE 33-YARD LINE. AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE
GAUCHOS WILL HAVE IT, 1ST DOWN AND 10. SO OUR FIRST PLAY
FROM SCRIMMAGE. WELCOME TO MCTV SPORTS. JEFF LOWERY, ALONG
WITH JOE KERSTING, MIKE CAROTENUTO AND OUR FIRST LOOK AT
THE OFFENSE OF THE GAUCHOS. WELL, THAT WAS A HECK
OF A KICK BY STANGLER. THAT’S A LITTLE POOCH KICK
BEHIND THE FRONT WALL AND BEFORE THE SECOND WALL. MESA NEARLY GOT
ON THAT BALL. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN
A GREAT START FOR THE THUNDERBIRDS, BUT THE
GAUCHOS WERE FORTUNATE TO GET ON AND KEEP
POSSESSION. SO MASON NGUYEN OUT OF
IRONWOOD HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH IS RIGHT AROUND
THE CORNER FROM GLENDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN
GLENDALE, ARIZONA. OUT OF THE SHOTGUN. 1ST DOWN AND 10. HE’S GOING TO
KEEP IT HIMSELF. HE AVERAGES 6.2 YARDS A
CARRY, BUT HE’S GOING TO GET KNOCKED DOWN. BOY, THAT’S A BIG-TIME HIT
RIGHT THERE FOR THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS. AND THEY OF COURSE LED
DEFENSIVELY BY KENDEL ROBINSON. I TALKED TO COACH CHAD
MONSON FROM GLENDALE BEFORE THE GAME, AND HE
LET US KNOW THAT NGUYEN WAS GOING TO BE STARTING. AND NGUYEN IS OBVIOUSLY
MORE OF A RUNNING THREAT THAN A PASSING THREAT AND
THAT MESA WAS READY FOR IT THAT FIRST PLAY. SO A GAIN OF 2, BRINGS
UP A 2ND DOWN AND 8. MASON BACK TO PASS,
LOOKING TO RUN AND HE WILL PICK UP PROBABLY ABOUT
4 OR 5 ON THE PLAY. IT’S GOING TO LEAVE
HIM ABOUT 3RD AND SHORT YARDAGE. SO MASON, WE’RE GOING TO
PROBABLY SEE A LOT OF HIM RUNNING SOME KIND OF
AN OPTION HERE TONIGHT. YEAH, MESA HAD A INSIDE
BACKER BLITZ ON THAT ONE. HE CAME CLEAN THROUGH ONE
OF THE INSIDE GAPS AND FORCED NGUYEN OUT TO THE
PERIMETER, WHERE HE WAS ABLE TO SCRAMBLE FOR A FEW
YARDS AND BRING UP A 3RD AND 4. HE’S THE 2ND LEADING
RUSHER IN TERMS OF YARDS, BUT HE’S AVERAGING
6.2 A CARRY. HE ACTUALLY RAN OUT OF
BOUNDS 4 YARDS FROM THE LINE TO GAIN. HE’S A LEFT-HANDED
THROWER. HE’S IN TROUBLE. AND NOW WITH THOSE QUICK
FEET, HE PICKS UP THE 1ST DOWN ACROSS MIDFIELD
INSIDE MESA TERRITORY. AND HE SCAMPERS DOWN
CLOSE TO THE 33-YARD LINE. NICE RUN RIGHT THERE. THAT ONE GOES FOR 27 YARDS AND A
1ST DOWN FOR GLENDALE. WELL, JEFF, ONE OF
THE THINGS WE TELL OUR QUARTERBACKS IS WHEN YOU
SEE MAN COVERAGE AND YOU CAN BREAK THE POCKET,
THERE’S A GREAT CHANCE FOR A LOT OF RUNNING ROOM,
BECAUSE THOSE DEFENSIVE BACKS ARE RUNNING
WITH RECEIVERS. THERE’S NOBODY EYEBALLING
THE QUARTERBACK IN THAT PARTICULAR SITUATION. AND HE WAS ABLE TO
SCRAMBLE FOR A HUGE GAIN. 1ST DOWN AND 10. 13:35 ON THE CLOCK. HANDOFF GOES
TO TJ ROBERTS. HE WAS QUESTIONABLE
COMING IN. AND HE’S GOING TO
PICK 5 ON 1ST DOWN. MARK HIM DOWN AT
THE 29-YARD LINE. I’M SORRY. DEXTER CARTER GETTING THE CARRY. TJ ROBERTS, ONE OF THE
TOP RUNNING BACKS IN THE CONFERENCE AND ONE IN
TERMS OF YARDS GAINED — PER GAME ON THE MESA SIDE. HE’S QUESTIONABLE. THAT’S ONE OF THE QUESTION
MARKS THAT WE HAD GOING INTO TODAY’S GAME. 13:03 ON THE CLOCK. HERE’S THE QUARTERBACK
MANSON NGUYEN. HE DUMPS IT OFF TO HIS
TIGHT END, WHO GETS IT DOWN CLOSE TO THE 20. AND THAT WILL BE A GAIN
OF 7 AND A 1ST DOWN. THAT’S RAYMOND PAUWELS PLAYING
TIGHT END FOR THE GAUCHOS. HE’S LEADING THE NATION
IN RECEPTIONS AT THE TIGHT-END POSITION. I HAD THE CHANCE TO
WATCH HIM IN HIGH SCHOOL. AND HE’S GOT A GREAT
SET OF HANDS ON HIM. I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT HIS
BLOCKING SKILLS, BUT HE’S IMPROVED IN THAT AREA. AND HE’S BEEN A
HIGHLY-RECRUITED YOUNG MAN THIS SOPHOMORE SEASON. SO THEY KEEP IT ON THE
GROUND AND RUN IT, A LITTLE SLANT RUN TO
THE 16-YARD LINE. AND THEY GO BACK TO DEXTER
CARTER, WHO COMES IN HERE THE TOP RUSHER ON THE
GAUCHOS, NEARLY 400 YARDS ON THE GROUND, A
COUPLE OF TOUCHDOWNS. THAT’S A LITTLE
TRAP PLAY INSIDE. THEY PULLED THE LEFT GUARD
AND THE H-BACK, THE TIGHT END THEIR PAUWELS. AND THEY GOT A NICE LITTLE
4-YARD GAIN, BRINGING UP 2ND AND 6. 2ND DOWN AND 6 FROM THE
17, AS WE APPROACH THE 12-MINUTE MARK. HERE IS THE QUARTERBACK
ON THE OPTION KEEP. AND HE IS GOING TO BE HIT
FOR A QUARTERBACK SACK, DOWN HE GOES,
ROBERT JOARDAN. WELL, THIS HAS BEEN THE
PROBLEM FOR GLENDALE. WHEN THEY GET A DRIVE
MOVING, THEY TEND TO SHOOT THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT
AND GET A NEGATIVE PLAY. AND IT’S GOING TO BRING
UP A 3RD AND 10 WHERE THEY HAD 2ND AND 6. YOU KNOW, IF HE CAN JUST
GAIN BACK TO THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE OR GAIN A YARD
OR TO 2, YOU KNOW, YOU BRING UP 3RD AND — WELL,
NOW YOU GOT 3RD AND LONG. UP FRONT JONATHAN
NATHANIEL JALEN SPADY, KENT CULLUMBER IS THE
CENTER FOR THE GAUCHOS, ANDREW RUELAS AND
EDDIE RIVAS UP FRONT. BACK TO PASS WITH TIME. NOW NO TIME. HE THROWS, WIDE OPEN. THEY TOOK A CHANCE. AND THEY CONNECT
DOWN FIELD. AND I’LL TELL YOU WHAT,
NGUYEN HAS LOOKED VERY CALM, COOL, AND COLLECTED
UNDER HEAVY DURESS. AND HE FINDS JAARED
BEAMON, ONE OF HIS TOP RECEIVERS. YEAH, BEAMON WAS TOTALLY
UNCOVERED ON THAT DRAG ROUTE COMING ACROSS
THE FORMATION. AND NGUYEN KEPT HIS POISE. HE HAD GREAT PRESSURE ON
HIM, BUT KEPT HIS POISE AND WAS ABLE TO DELIVER
THE BALL ON TIME. AND BRINGS UP A 1ST AND
GOAL FOR THE GAUCHOS. A PICK UP OF 18
YARDS FOR GLENDALE. AND THEY’RE LOOKING VERY
EFFICIENT ON THEIR OPENING DRIVE. MCGREGOR THE H-BACK
IN THAT FORMATION. AND THIS TIME THE MESA
DEFENSE UP FRONT GETTING THE JOB DONE AND THEY ARE
LED BY NUMBER 5 ON THE DEFENSE, JAQUAN BEAVER,
6 FOOT 210 POUNDER OUT OF MIAMI, FLORIDA. WE GOT A FLAG ON
THE PLAY HERE. IT IS ON THE OFFENSIVE
BACKFIELD OF THE GAUCHOS. PERSONAL FOUL, DEFENSE
NUMBER 5, HALF THE DISTANCE OF THE
GOAL, 1ST DOWN. SO GAUCHOS GET A BREAK
THERE, BUT ON THAT PARTICULAR PLAY I THOUGHT
THE OFFENSIVE LINE DID A PRETTY NICE JOB BLOCKING
THAT DEFENSIVE FRONT. I THOUGHT THE BACK DID A POOR
JOB FOLLOWING HIS BLOCKING. HE SHOULD HAVE BOUNCED
THAT PLAY FURTHER TO HIS RIGHT FOLLOWING THE
BACKSIDE BLOCKER WHO WAS PULLING ON THE PLAY. AND THAT’S GOING TO BE 1ST
AND GOAL JUST INSIDE THE 3-YARD LINE,
IT LOOKS LIKE. AND GLENDALE LOOKS A
LITTLE CONFUSED RIGHT NOW. AND THEY’RE DOWN TO 12
SECONDS ON THE PLAY CLOCK. NGUYEN, THE QUARTERBACK,
NOW AS YOU CAN SEE UNDER CENTER. AND HE WILL HANDOFF TO
DEXTER RUNNING RIGHT. AND HE WILL TAKE ON A
DEFENDER AT THE 1 AND DIVE INTO THE END ZONE. AND GLENDALE LEADS
IT 6 TO NOTHING. WELL, JEFF, I THINK THE
COACHES SAW THE SAME THING I SAW BECAUSE THEY RAN THE
EXACT SAME PLAY THAT TIME. AND THIS TIME CARTER
FOLLOWED HIS BLOCKS, HAD A NICE HOLD ON THE OFF
TACKLE AREA, AND PUNCHED IT INTO THE END ZONE. GLENDALE, VERY
IMPRESSIVE FIRST DRIVE. SO A GOOD START. NOW JULIAN BOTELLO, WHO
HAS MISSED 4 EXTRA POINTS THIS YEAR, AND MAKE IT 5. THAT ONE IS BLOCKED. THAT’S A LIVE BALL. IF IT’S RETURNED, IT’S
A 2-POINT PLAY FOR MESA. BUT INSTEAD BOTELLO — WISELY,
THE FRESHMAN WISELY, JUMPS ON IT. AND WITH 10:21
LEFT TO PLAY HERE. A 6-NOTHING LEAD FOR
VISITING GLENDALE. WELL, IT LOOKED LIKE IT
WAS A LOW KICK BY BOTELLO ON THAT ONE. THERE WAS PENETRATION, BUT
HE’S GOT TO GET THE BALL UP QUICKER THAN THAT. SO AS THE 2018 GRIDIRON
CAMPAIGN STARTS TO WIND DOWN, JOE, YOU KNOW,
THERE’S ALMOST A SENSE — YOU KNOW, WE TALK ABOUT
THE POTENTIAL CANCELLATION OF FOOTBALL. THERE’S KIND OF SENSE OF
ALMOST SADNESS ABOUT THIS WHOLE SITUATION. AND, YOU KNOW, I THINK
THESE LAST 3 WEEKS IS JUST A TIME FOR ALL OF US TO
REALLY TREASURE WHAT WE HAVE HERE. WELL, I’VE BEEN
SAD SINCE FEBRUARY. I KNOW YOU HAVE. BUT I TURNED MY SADNESS
INTO MOTIVATION. AND I’VE BEEN WORKING WITH
PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY TO TRY TO HELP THINGS GET
BETTER IN OUR DISTRICT. SO WE’LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS
ON NOVEMBER 6, WHEN THEY VOTE. AND HOPEFULLY WE’LL HAVE
A BETTER SHOT CONTINUING ATHLETICS AND FOOTBALL
IN THE FUTURE. ALL RIGHT. JULIAN BOTELLO BOOTS
THIS ONE HIGH AND DEEP. IT’S GOING TO BE FIELDED
BACK AT THE 6-YARD LINE BY THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS. AND THEN THE RETURN MAN
IS GOING TO BE HIT, THAT’S ROBERTS, RIGHT AROUND
THE 24-YARD LINE. LET’S SEE IF THEY GIVE
HIM FORWARD PROGRESS. PRETTY GOOD COVERAGE. IT WASN’T A REAL DEEP KICK
AND FIELDED BY ABOUT THE 5-YARD LINE, BUT HE
KEPT HIM INSIDE THE 25. ANYTIME YOU KEEP THEM
INSIDE THE 25 NOW IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL, THAT’S
A PRETTY GOOD JOB. NOW MESA IS WITHOUT THEIR
STARTING QUARTERBACK. HE’S DONE FOR THE SEASON,
GREAT PLAYER IN MACVITTIE. IN TO TAKE OVER THE
OFFENSIVE RANGE IS GOING TO TYLER WORRELL, A YOUNG
MAN OUT OF NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN IN
THE WEST VALLEY. AND HE HAD A DYNAMITE
HIGH SCHOOL CAREER. WE’LL SEE HOW HE
DOES HERE TONIGHT. WELL, 1ST DOWN AND 10,
THEY RUN A LITTLE END AROUND, AND THIS
IS TJ ROBERTS. AND HE’S GOING TO BE STOPPED
NEAR THE POINT OF ATTACK. AND GETTING IN THERE FIRST
WAS BIG 99 CHRIS BLAKENEY OUT OF COX MILL HIGH
SCHOOL IN NORTH CAROLINA, 6’3, 330 POUNDS. YEAH, I’M ANXIOUS TO
WATCH TJ ROBERTS TONIGHT. HE’S ONE OF THE LEADING
RUSHERS IN AMERICA. HE’S RUN IT FOR 151 YARDS
PER GAME, WHICH IS AMAZING ON THE COLLEGE LEVEL. AND HE’S GOING TO GET TO
ROCK A LOT TONIGHT, I’M SURE. FROM THE 24, MESA,
2ND DOWN AND 9. 9:42 ON THE CLOCK. THEY THROW TO THE FLATS. AND, BOY, I’LL TELL YOU,
GLENDALE, HERE IN THE EARLY STAGES IS
MAKING A STATEMENT. NICE JOB READING THAT ONE
PERFECTLY, RASHIE HODGE OUT OF MOUNTAIN
POINT HIGH SCHOOL. HODGE IS A GREAT
DEFENSIVE PLAYER. HE’S THE LEADING STAT
MAN FOR THEIR DEFENSE. HE’S GOT 41 TOTAL TACKLES. HE’S RESPONSIBLE FOR 9
TAKEAWAYS, JEFF LOWERY, 5 FUMBLE RECOVERIES, AND
4 INTERCEPTIONS, AMAZING PLAYER MR. HODGE. 3RD DOWN AND 10, THEY
LOSE A YARD ON THAT QUICK SCREEN TO THE
FAR HASHMARKS. 9 MINUTES ON THE CLOCK. THEY’LL SET UP A
BUBBLE UNDERNEATH. AND THIS IS GOING TO BE
FOR 1ST-DOWN YARDAGE AND MORE, ALL THE
WAY UP TO THE 40. IT’S A 17-YARD PICK UP. AND A WELL-EXECUTED PLAY,
FINDING TYLON PATTERSON, THE 6’5 RECEIVER. WELL, THAT’S A GREAT
DESIGN OF THAT PLAY. THEY WENT TO AN EMPTY
SET ON 3RD AND LONG. THEY BROUGHT THE WIDE
RECEIVER SCREEN INTO THE MIDDLE. AND THEY DID A GREAT JOB
OF GETTING THE OFFENSIVE LINEMEN DOWN THE FIELD TO
BLOCKED THE 2ND LEVEL OF THE DEFENDERS. AND NUMBER 17 DID A GREAT
JOB FOR MESA, PATTERSON PICKING UP THAT 1ST DOWN. SO THE 4TH PLAY OF THE
DRIVE COMING UP, IT STARTED BACK AT THE 23. EIGHT AND A HALF ON THE
CLOCK, WORKING OUT OF SHOTGUN FOR MESA. I THINK AS A YOUNG MAN
THAT CAN DO VERY WELL FOR THIS TIME IN TYLER
WORRELL, HE THROWS, AND THAT ONE IS GOING TO BE
BROKEN UP INCOMPLETE ON THE FAR SIDE AS HE — DID
THEY GIVE HIM THE CATCH? YEAH, HE GOT HIS
FEET INBOUNDS. HE SURE DID. OKAY. SO IT’S A 4-YARD PICK UP. AND THAT WILL BRING
UP 2ND DOWN AND 6. YEAH, THAT’S WAS JACOB
FRANKLIN IN THERE ON DEFENSE FOR THE GAUCHOS,
KNOCKING THE RECEIVER OUT OF BOUNDS. FRANKLIN’S FATHER PLAYED
FOR ME AT GLENDALE BACK IN THE 90S. HE WAS A GREAT
PLAYER, ARON FRANKLIN. 8:10 ON THE CLOCK. CLOCK WINDING DOWN. IT DO NOT STOP. AND ROBERTS, AN
USUAL RUN THERE. HE CUT LEFT. THEN HE TRIED TO
CUT IT BACK RIGHT. AND THEN HE WAS MET
DEFENSIVELY, IT LOOKED LIKE CANADY ON DEFENSE OUT
OF APOLLO HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE GLENDALE GAUCHOS. BRINGING UP A 3RD DOWN AND
4, WITH 7:49 LEFT TO PLAY HERE IN THE
OPENING QUARTER. A GAIN OF 2. WELL, WORRELL HASN’T
THROWN ANYTHING DOWN THE FIELD SO FAR. WE’LL SEE WHAT THEY
DO HERE ON 3RD AND 4. I DOUBT IF WE’LL SEE A
SCREEN ON THIS SITUATION, BUT YOU NEVER KNOW. I’VE SEEN WORRELL
4 TIMES THIS YEAR. I’VE BEEN OVER HERE QUITE
A BIT THIS SEASON WITH MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE. AND I THINK THIS YOUNG MAN
HAS A LOT OF POTENTIAL. HERE’S THE HOT READ TO THE
FLATS NEARSIDE, THAT WAS CHRISTION BREWINGTON. A LITTLE DIG ROUTE, BUT
HE WAS WELL COVERED. AND IT’S GOING TO BRING
UP A 4TH AND 4, AND FORCE MESA INTO A
PUNTING SITUATION. YEAH, COACH MICHAEL BELL,
WHO CALLS THE DEFENSE FOR THE GAUCHOS, WENT TO A
COVER-2 LOOK AND HAD 6 UNDERNEATH DEFENDERS. THEY ONLY RUSHED 3 GUYS. AND IT WAS REALLY
DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO FIND AN OPEN RECEIVER ON
THAT SHORT ROUTE. SO GOOD CALL BY GLENDALE’S
COACH, COACH BELL, TO BRING UP A 4TH DOWN
FOR THE THUNDERBIRDS. AND SOMETIMES IN THAT
COVER 2 YOU DO HAVE VULNERABILITIES
UNDERNEATH. THAT’S A BEAUTIFUL PUNT. AND HE COMES UP
FUMBLING THE BALL. DID GLENDALE SNEAK
IN THERE AND GET IT? MESA SAYS THEY’VE GOT IT. WELL, I CAN’T BELIEVE HE DIDN’T
CALL FOR A FAIR CATCH. THERE WAS A — MESA HAS
GOT IT — ALL OVER HIM AS THE BALL CAME DOWN. YOU ALSO HAVE A
LEFT-FOOTED PUNTER, WHICH A LOT OF THESE RETURN MEN
AREN’T USED TO CATCHING WITH A SPIN, THEY HE HAVE
A DIFFERENT SPIN, OFF THE LEFT FOOT. AND UNFORTUNATELY FOR
THE GAUCHOS, THEY DID NOT FIELD IT CLEANLY. AND MESA GOT ON THAT BALL. WATCH HOW CLOSE THIS
DEFENDER IS RIGHT THERE, AND HE LET’S IT GO
RIGHT THROUGH HIS ARMS. SO THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS
WILL HAVE IT GOAL TO GO FROM JUST INSIDE
THE 5-YARD LINE. SO A BOTCH PUNT. AND THE NICE RECOVERY BY
THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS, AND CHANCE TO TIE THIS THING
UP AS THEY TRAIL 6 TO NOTHING WITH 7
MINUTES AND 8 SECONDS. HANDOFF TJ ROBERTS. AND THE BRAHMA BULL JUST
BUSTING HIS WAY THROUGH THAT FRONT WALL. AND HE’S INTO
THE END ZONE. WE’RE TIED AT 6. THAT’S GETS TO BE VERY
DISHEARTENING FOR DEFENSE WHEN THEY STOP THE
OPPOSING OFFENSE IN THE 2ND SERIES. AND THEN THEY MUFF THE
BALL AND HAVE TO GO PLAY GOAL-LINE DEFENSE. THAT’S A DIFFICULT
SITUATION. ALL RIGHT. SO MESA TRYING TO TAKE
THEIR FIRST LEAD OF THE GAME WITH AROS. AND HE NAILS IT TO MAKE IT
7-6 MESA HERE IN THE FIRST WITH 7:03 LEFT TO GO. LET’S SEND IT BACK
DOWNSTAIRS TO MIKE CAROTENUTO. TERRANCE ROBERTS JR. GOT
THAT TOUCHDOWN, GUYS. AND I WAS INFORMED BEFORE
THE GAME THAT, YES, HE’S AVERAGING, LIKE YOU GUYS
TALKED ABOUT, OVER 151 YARDS A GAME. THAT’S HIS 8TH TOUCHDOWN
OF THE SEASON NOW, BUT HE’S TRYING TO BREAK THE
SCHOOL RECORD TONIGHT. GUYS, HE NEEDS 169
YARDS TO DO IT. AND THAT WAS SET — AND
YOU WEREN’T EVEN COACHING THEN, COACH — BACK IN
’68, ’69, THE FIRST 2 YEARS OF THE PROGRAM. AND IT’S AT 2,304 YARDS. AND HE NEEDS 169 YARDS
TONIGHT TO DO THAT. SO THAT WOULD BE
AN AMAZING FEAT. I MEAN, HE STILL HAS 3
GAMES LEFT TO DO IT, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, IF HE
GETS 169, HE WILL BREAK THE 50-YEAR-OLD
SCHOOL RECORD. WOW. THAT WOULD BE IMPRESSIVE. AND THAT’S SOMETHING
TO HANG YOUR HAT ON. WELL, AND ESPECIALLY WITH COACH
FELKER’S OFFENSIVE APPROACH. YOU KNOW, HE LOVES TO
THROW THE BALL AROUND, BUT THIS YEAR HE’S GOING TO
THE STUD RUNNING BACK. WELL, THEY’RE STAYING AWAY
FROM THESE TWO SPEEDSTERS. AND GLENDALE HAS
BOTCHED ANOTHER KICK. A PUNT A MOMENT AGO THAT
LED TO A 4-YARD RUN BY TJ ROBERTS OF MESA. WERE THEY ABLE TO RECOVERY
HERE JUST INSIDE THEIR OWN 40? I DIDN’T SEE THE
OFFICIALS MAKE A SIGNAL. I STILL HAVEN’T
SEEN THE SIGNAL. I THINK THE
GAUCHOS GOT IT. AND THAT IS WHAT THE —
OUR OFFICIAL JUDGE IN THE BACK SAYS. SO 6:59 LEFT TO GO HERE. WE’RE IN THE
OPENING QUARTER. YOU’RE WATCHING NATIONAL
JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL ON THE HOME OF ARIZONA JUNIOR
COLLEGE FOOTBALL, MCTV SPORTS. GLENDALE HAS GOT TO MAKE
AN ADJUSTMENT ON THEIR KICKOFF RETURN TEAM AND
BRING THAT 2ND-LEVEL RECEIVER UP CLOSER AND
FAIR CATCH THAT LITTLE POOCH KICK. SO THEY’LL HAVE IT 1ST AN
10 FROM THEIR OWN 37-YARD LINE. HANDOFF GOES TO CARTER,
WEAVING HIS WAY THROUGH THE SECONDARY AND OUT
BOUNDS NEAR THE LINE TO GAIN. HECK OF A HIT OVER THERE
BY RUBEN LEBRON, THE CORNER COMING UP OUT
OF THE SECONDARY. YOU KNOW ONE THING I
NOTICED ON THAT PLAY IS THE DEFENSE SLOWED DOWN
FOR ABOUT A STEP AND A HALF BECAUSE OF FAKE OF
THE QUARTERBACK ON THE BOOTLEG HERE. AND SO THEY’RE SO LEERY OF
NGUYEN RUNNING THE BALL, IT SLOWED DOWN THE PURSUIT
OF THE MESA DEFENSE ON THAT PARTICULAR PLAY. THAT WILL BRING UP A 2ND
DOWN AND — LET’S CALL IT A 2ND DOWN AND 4. SCOREBOARD SAYS
2ND DOWN AND 3. WORKING FROM THE
44-YARD LINE. HERE IS NGUYEN GIVING OFF
AND CARTER HAS WHAT LOOKS TO BE A LITTLE SHY
OF THE LINE TO GAIN. SO IT’S GOING TO BE A 3RD
AND INCHES COMING UP WITH 6:18 LEFT TO GO HERE,
FIRST QUARTER ACTION. YEAH, THEY MARKED HIM BACK
FURTHER THAN I THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO GIVE
HIM ON THAT PARTICULAR PLAY. BUT THIS IS A KEY 3RD
AND 1 FOR THE GAUCHOS. AND WE GOT GLENDALE
JUMPING INTO THAT NEUTRAL ZONE, BUT WERE
THEY DRAWN OFF. AND IT’S GOING TO BE
AGAINST THE DEFENSE. SO THAT WILL BE A
3RD DOWN CONVERSION. OFF SIDE, DEFENSE, NUMBER
5, 5-YARD PENALTY, YARDAGE RESULTS IN A 1ST DOWN. WELL, I’M A
LITTLE OLD SCHOOL. YOU KNOW, ME BY NOW, JEFF
LOWERY, WHEN IT’S 3RD AND 1, I WANT THE QUARTERBACK
UNDERNEATH THE CENTER. YOU KNOW, THE THREAT OF
THE QUARTERBACK SNEAK, MAKE HIM RESPECT THAT. AND IF THEY JAM UP IN
THERE, THEN YOU RUN THE BALL OFF TACKLE. BUT I DON’T LIKE SNAPPING
IT 5 YARDS DEEP WHEN YOU ONLY GET TO GET 1 YARD. I WOULD TEND TO
AGREE WITH YOU. WITH 5:51 ON THE CLOCK. SO A FRESH SET OF DOWNS. AND NOW GLENDALE FIND
THEMSELVES IN MESA TERRITORY FOR THE SECOND
TIME IN THIS OPENING QUARTER. NGUYEN IN TROUBLE. AND HE’S GOT THE
GREAT, QUICK FEET. HE WAS ABLE TO
BOUNCE OUTSIDE. AND HE MADE SOMETHING
OUT OF NOTHING. AND ANOTHER TACKLE THAT
TIME BY MESA’S KENDEL ROBINSON. YEAH, THAT’S WAS SUPPOSED
TO BE A QUARTERBACK COUNTER. THE PLAY GOT A LITTLE
FOULED UP WITH SOME PENETRATION EARLY IN THE
GUARD AND TACKLE GAP AREA. AND ANYTIME YOU GET
PENETRATION ON THOSE QUARTERBACK COUNTERS OR
ANY TYPE OF THE COUNTER PLAY, IS THAT USUALLY
FOULS UP THE EXECUTION. NOW WE ARE COMING TO THE
5-MINUTE MARK IN QUARTER NUMBER ONE. A 7-6 LEAD FOR THE HOME
TEAM IN THE ALL RED, THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS. GLENDALE GAUCHOS OUT OF
GLENDALE ARIZONA ON THE WEST SIDE OF THE
VALLEY OF THE SUN. PASS COMPLETE. AND ONCE AGAIN, HE HITS
HIS TIGHT END AND PICKS UP CLOSE TO 12 YARDS. THERE IS AN
INJURED PLAYER. AND IT IS THE QUARTERBACK. AND HE IS DOWN AND
RIVING IN PAIN. HE’S GRABBING
THAT RIGHT KNEE. AND BOY, I’LL TELL YOU, AS
RAYMOND PAUWELS, THE BIG 6’4, 255 POUND TIGHT END
WHO HAS ALREADY BEEN AN IMPACT PLAYER IN THIS
GAME, WILL HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE NEXT PLAY. FRESH SET OF DOWN. 1ST DOWN AND 10. WE GOT AN INJURY TIMEOUT
WITH 4:54 LEFT TO GO HERE IN THE 1ST QUARTER. AND LET’S SEND IT BACK
DOWNSTAIRS TO MIKE CAROTENUTO. YEAH, THANKS A LOT, JEFF. YEAH, THE LAST TIME THAT
THESE TWO TEAMS PLAYED NGUYEN ACTUALLY DIDN’T
HAVE THE BEST OF GAMES. BUT HIM HEADED OFF TO THE
SIDELINE NOW, BUT BOTH QUARTERBACKS, ACTUALLY ALL
3 QUARTERBACKS, PLAYED. ELIJAH LORENCE AND NICK
THOMAS BOTH PLAYED, NOT HAVING THE BEST NIGHT AGAINST
THE THUNDERBIRDS DEFENSE. THE TEAM HAD TWO
INTERCEPTIONS OVERALL, NO PASSING TOUCHDOWNS. AND THEN AGAIN, YOU GUYS
TOUCHED ON THAT, BUT NGUYEN, THIS KID HAS TAKEN
A LITTLE BIT OF A BEATING THIS YEAR. AND HE’S COME BACK
EACH A TIME, COACH. BUT HE’S LIMPING OFF. WE’LL GO OVER
THERE TO FIND OUT. BUT, MAN, THE OFFENSIVE
LINE, YOU TALKED ABOUT THAT REAL QUICK TOO,
COACH, IT SEEMS LIKE HALF THE GLENDALE OFFENSIVE
LINE IS BREAKING DOWN AT ONE TIME. AND WHEN THEY HAVE HAD THE
BIG RUNS, IT’S THE HALF OF THE LINE THAT HASN’T BROKE
DOWN THEY’RE GOING THE OTHER WAY. SO MESA GETTING THAT
PRESSURE TO LOOK AT. SO WE’LL SEND IT BACK UP
TO YOU GUYS, BUT NGUYEN OUT OF THE GAME RIGHT NOW. SO GLENDALE NOW WILL HAVE
ELIJAH LORENCE IN THERE. AND HE WILL HANDOFF. HE’LL GIVE IT TO CARTER. AND HE’LL GAIN ABOUT 4,
ANOTHER TACKLE BY KENDEL ROBINSON OF MESA. WELL, GLENDALE NEARLY GOT
A DELAY OF THE GAME THERE. LORENCE TOOK HIS SWEET
TIME GETTING OUT ON THE FIELD. WELL, THE COACHES KIND
OF DELAYED HIM AS WELL. AND THEY BARELY GOT THAT
BALL OFF WITH ONE SECOND TO GO ON THE TIMER. LET’S SEE IF THEY PICK UP
THE PACE ON THIS 2ND DOWN PLAY. GAIN OF 2, 2ND DOWN AND 8
FOR THE THUNDERBIRDS — OR FOR THE GLENDALE GAUCHOS. THUNDERBIRDS ON
DEFENSE, SHOWING BLITZ. HERE THEY COME, HANDOFF,
LEFT SIDE, CARTER BREAKS LOOSE. THERE IS IS A PENALTY
MARKER DOWN, AS HE IS RUN OUT OF BOUNDS NEAR
THE 13-YARD LINE. BUT LET’S SEE WHAT
THE YELLOW FLAG SAYS. THAT WAS A GREAT JOB BY
THE OFFENSIVE LINE OF THE GAUCHOS, PICKING UP
THE INSIDE BLITZERS. AND THAT WAS A REALLY GOOD
CALL THERE BY JD SOLLARS, THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR,
TO GET THAT BALL OUT TO THE PERIMETER AND A REALLY
WELL-EXECUTED PLAY BY THE GAUCHOS. THE PLAY, OFF SIDES,
DEFENSE NUMBER 11, HOLDING, OFFENSE NUMBER
59, THE PENALTY IS OFFSET, REPLAY THE DOWN. SO WE’LL REPLAY 2ND DOWN
AND 8, WITH 3:45 LEFT TO GO HERE IN THE OPENING
QUARTER OF PLAY. AND A 7-6 LEAD FOR THE
HOST TEAM, YOUR MESA THUNDERBIRDS
IN THE ALL RED. YOU KNOW, JEFF, FOR AS
LONG A TIME OFF AS BOTH OF THESE TEAMS HAD, YOU
WONDERED HOW THEY WERE GOING TO COME OUT, IF THEY
WERE GOING TO COME OUT REAL RUSTY AND LACKING IN
EXECUTION, OVERALL IT’S BEEN PRETTY
GOOD EXECUTION. UNFORTUNATELY, ON THAT
PLAY, YOU KNOW, WITH A COUPLE OF PENLITES, BUT
OTHER THAN THAT, YOU KNOW, IT’S BEEN A PRETTY CLEAN
GAME, PRETTY WELL EXECUTED FROM BOTH OFFENSES. SO THIS IS A 2ND PLAY FOR
THE QUARTERBACK WHO IS ELIJAH LORENCE. NO LOFTY NUMBERS THIS
YEAR FOR ANY OF THE QUARTERBACKS AT GLENDALE. THEY ARE DOWN NEAR THE
BOTTOM IN PASSING AND OVERALL YARDS PER GAME,
BUT I WILL TELL YOU WHAT, THEY KEEP THROWING TO THIS
TIGHT END RAYMOND PAUWELS, 6’4, 250 POUNDER. HE’S A FORMER
MILLENNIUM TIGER. AND HE HAS MADE AN IMPACT. THAT IS HIS 3RD CATCH
ALREADY IN THIS CONTEST. YEAH, HE’S A NICE BIG
TARGET WITH GREAT HANDS. I DIDN’T LIKE THE FACT
THAT HE WENT SO DEEP IN HIS OWN BACKFIELD TO
CATCH THAT SCREEN. YOU KNOW, HE WAS ABOUT 7
YARDS DEEP, WHEN HE CAUGHT THE BALL. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICER
FOR THEM IF HE WAS ONLY ABOUT 3 OR 4 YARDS
DEEP, BUT IT SET UP THE LINEMEN’S BLOCK
MUCH BETTER. 8TH PLAY OF THE DRIVE
THAT STARTED BACK AT THE GLENDALE 37. AND CARTER ON PLAY ACTION. HE THROWS OVER THE MIDDLE,
OPEN RECEIVER, HAD TO NEGOTIATE THE OFFICIAL AND
HE FINDS BRIAN SMITH JR., THE 6’4, 220 POUNDER. TOUCHDOWN
GLENDALE GAUCHOS. THEY REGAIN THE LEAD 12-7. REALLY NICE JOB BY THE
OFFENSIVE LINE AND RUNNING BACK FOR THE GAUCHOS,
PICKING UP THE BLITZ AGAIN. MESA HAS BEEN BRINGING
A LOT OF HEAT SO FAR TONIGHT. THAT PUT HIM IN
STRAIGHT-MAN COVERAGE. AND A GREAT JOB BY THE
WIDE RECEIVER, SMITH, TO BEAT THE CORNER
ON THE POST ROUTE. AND PERFECT THROW BY LORENCE
RIGHT IN HIS BREADBASKET. GOT AN OFFICIAL ON THE WAY AND 6
POINTS FOR THE GAUCHOS. I THINK YOU GOT TO GIVE A LITTLE
CREDIT TO THAT OFFICIAL. THAT WAS A PRETTY
GOOD SCREEN. GAVE UP THE BODY
ON THE EXTRA POINT. IT IS UP AND IT IS
GOOD BY JULIAN BOTELLO. SO 13-7 IS THE SCORE, IN
THE FAVOR OF THE VISITING GLENDALE GAUCHOS. WELL, LET’S TAKE A TIMEOUT
ON MCTV SPORTS. YOU’RE WATCHING NATIONAL
JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL ON MCTV. ALL RIGHT. WE’RE BACK HERE AT
MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND VERY GOOD COVERAGE BY GLENDALE
IN A SHORT YARDAGE RETURN ABOUT 7 YARDS. AND SO MESA WILL BE
STARTING INSIDE THEIR OWN 10-YARD LINE OR ACTUALLY
AT THEIR OWN 10-YARD LINE WITH 2:31 LEFT TO GO. THE VISITING GAUCHOS LEAD IT
13-7 HERE ON MCTV SPORTS. AND HOPEFULLY THE STARTING
QUARTERBACK MASON NGUYEN IS ALL RIGHT FOR GLENDALE,
BUT I WILL TELL YOU, LORENCE CAME IN AND SHOWED
A LOT OF COMPOSER AND MARCHED THEM DOWN
INTO THE END ZONE. YES, HE DID. THEY MIXED UP THE RUNNING
PASS VERY WELL WHILE HE WAS IN THERE AND GOT THE
BIG PLAY ON THE POST ROUTE TO SMITH. SO IT’S 1ST DOWN AND 10. TYLER WORRELL IN THERE,
AND THE BALL GOES TO HIS OUTSTANDING RUNNING
BACK TJ ROBERTS. AND ROBERTS IS CLOSE TO
THE 17-YARD LINE, A GAIN OF 7. THIS IS MY FIRST TIME
WATCHING ROBERTS. ACTUALLY I WENT TO ANOTHER
GAME WHEN MESA PLAYED GLENDALE BEFORE, BUT I DIDN’T
WATCH THE GAME VERY CLOSELY. I WAS DOING A LITTLE POLITICING
THAT TONIGHT, PARTICULAR. BUT I’M REALLY IMPRESSED
WITH THIS RUNNING BACK. HE REALLY RUNS WELL
BETWEEN THE TACKLES, IT APPEARS TO ME. 2ND DOWN AND 7, BALL
RESTING RIGHT AT THE 18-YARD LINE. AND NOW AM EMPTY
BACKFIELD FOR WORRELL. AND HE’S GOING TO
SHOW OFF A STRONG ARM. AND THROWS IT
LONG AND DEEP. AND IT’S INCOMPLETE. AS WE SEND IT BACK
DOWNSTAIRS TO MIKE. THANKS A LOT, JEFF. YEAH, I WENT OVER TO
THE GLENDALE SIDELINE. AND MASON NGUYEN ALREADY
HAS HIS PADS OFF. HE HAS ICE AROUND
HIS RIGHT KNEE. SO I’M GUESSING HE WILL
NOT BE BACK IN THIS GAME. HE WAS WINCING, IN A
LITTLE BIT OF PAIN. I DON’T KNOW IF HE
CAME DOWN FUNNY, COACH. I DON’T KNOW IF YOU SAW
IT BETTER FROM UP THERE ON THE HIT, BUT, I MEAN,
HE GOT HIT PRETTY HARD. BUT YEAH, HE’S HAD A FEW
HIT THIS YEAR, TAKING A LITTLE BIT OF A BEATING,
BUT ICE AROUND THE RIGHT KNEE AND THE PADS OFF SO
IT LOOKS LIKES HE WILL NOT BE BACK FOR THE
REST OF THE GAME. SO NOW YOU’RE LOOKING AT
A 3RD DOWN AND 2, BALL AT THE 18-YARD LINE. AND THEY’RE GOING TO
POSSIBLY BY IN A PUNT SITUATION RIGHT HERE,
UP FRONT FOR MESA. WYATT LAPUAHO
AT LEFT GUARD. YOU GOT THE LEFT TACKLE. EJ OGLESBY, RENFRO AT
CENTER, AND THEN ON THE RIGHT SIDE PILLIANS
AND VERDOZA. NOW THE OFFENSIVE LINE
IS HOPING COACH FELKER IS GOING TO KEEP THEM OUT
THERE AND GO FOR IT ON 4TH AND SHORT, BUT I THINK
HE’S MAKING A WISE DECISION BRINGING THE
PUNTING UNIT ON THE FIELD. BUT IF I’M GLENDALE, I’M
WATCHING FOR A FAKE ALL THE WAY ON THIS 4TH
AND 1 SITUATION. SPANGLER BACK TO KICK,
AVERAGES 43 YARDS A KICK THIS YEAR. HE’S GOING TO GET ABOUT 40 ON
THIS ONE, 41 YARDS, NO RETURN. GLENDALE WILL HAVE IT WITH
54 SECONDS LEFT TO GO, FIRST QUART ACTION. AND THEY LEAD IT 13-7. WELL, SO FAR, REALLY, THIS
GAME HAS BEEN DOMINATED BY THE GAUCHOS. THE ONLY MESA SCORED WAS
ON THE MUFF PUNT THAT SET UP MESA AT THE
5-YARD LINE GOING IN. OTHER THAN THAT, MESA HAS
NOT HAD CONSISTENCY IN THEIR OFFENSE AS
WELL AS GLENDALE HAS. AND GLENDALE HAS MIXED UP
THE INSIDE RUN GAME, PLUS THE QUARTERBACK ON THE
EDGE ON THE KEEP, AS WELL AS THE RUN-PASS OPTION. AND THEN OBVIOUSLY THEY’VE
BEEN ABLE TO HIT THE BIG BALL DOWN THE FIELD FOR
THE TOUCHDOWN ON THE LAST RUN. SO THE QUARTERBACK, ONCE
AGAIN ELIJAH LORENCE, IN RELIEF OF STARTING
QUARTERBACK MASON NGUYEN. THEIR LAST POSSESSION,
8 PLAYS, 63 YARDS. AND THEY’LL THROW
IT OVER THE MIDDLE. AND SOMEHOW SOMEWAY THAT
WAS SAM WESTFALL OUT OF ST. GORGE, UTAH, WHO HAD
THE WHEREWITHAL TO TURN HIS BODY AND BAT THAT
BALL DOWN INCOMPLETE. WELL, THAT LOOKED LIKE
IT COULD HAVE BEEN PASS INTERFERENCE ON NUMBER 6
CHARLES, WHO WAS IN MAN COVERAGE ON THE WIDE
RECEIVER — EXCUSE ME — WESTFALL. I’M SORRY. I’M LOOKING AT
THE WRONG ROSTER. WESTFALL IS THE DEFENDER. THEY HAVE TWO NUMBER 6S. HE’S THE DEFENSIVE
NUMBER 6. SO THAT BRINGS UP
2ND DOWN AND 10. 49 SECONDS LEFT TO GO
HERE, OPENING QUARTER, BOBBLED SNAP. AND THE QUARTERBACK
LORENCE GOES FOR IT HIMSELF. AND TAKES OFF
RUNNING LEFT. AND HE’S GOING TO BE
STOPPED COLD AFTER A 1-YARD PICK UP. AND DEIONTAY DOZIER,
A YOUNG MAN OUT OF MCCLINTOCK HIGH SCHOOL,
NEARBY TEMPE, WAS IN ON THE TACKLE. THAT’S PROBABLY GOING TO
BE THE LAST PLAY OF THE QUARTER. THEY DO NEED TO
RUN ONE MORE PLAY. THERE’S 28 ON
THE PLAY CLOCK. AND WE’RE DOWN TO NOW
20 ON THE 1ST QUARTER. BIG 55, KENT CULLUMBER
DOING THE NAPPING HONORS OUT OF POWERHOUSE
PINNACLE. TO THE AIR ON
3RD DOWN AND 8. AND LORENCE THROWS. HE THREW BEHIND THE
RECEIVER, BUT IT WAS OFF HIS FINGERTIPS. AND COLBERT, A BALL HE
PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE HAD. AND WITH 5 SECONDS LEFT
TO GO HERE IN THE 1ST QUARTER. THE PUNTING UNIT IS
OUT FOR GLENDALE. THAT WAS A NICE JOB BY THE
QUARTERBACK, ELUDING THE RUSH, BUT AS YOU SAID, HE
THREW THE BALL A LITTLE BIT BEHIND COLBERT. COLBERT GOT BOTH
HANDS ON IT. WE USED TO SAY TO A
RECEIVERS, YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON IT, YOU
OUGHT TO BE ABLE TO CATCH IT. AND UNFORTUNATELY, FOR
GLENDALE, THEY’RE HAVING TO BRING OUT THE
PUNTING UNIT. THIS IS PAUWELS,
AVERAGING 33 YARDS A KICK. AND THIS ONE IS GOING TO
BE FIELDED BACK AT THE 15-YARD LINE AND SPUN
DOWN AFTER A 1-YARD GAIN. SO THAT ONE GOES 43 YARDS. THERE IS A FLAG AT THE
35-YARD LINE OF MESA. IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS
THROWN BY THE UMPIRE. SO WE GOT A PUSH IN THE
BACK AS WE COME TO THE END OF QUARTER NUMBER ONE. VISITING GLENDALE LEADS
THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS 13-7. WE’LL HAVE MORE ON
MCTV IN JUST A MOMENT. ALL RIGHT. WE’RE BACK HERE AT
MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE. AND WE ARE NOT QUITE AT
THE END OF QUARTER NUMBER ONE, BECAUSE THEY ARE
GOING TO RUN ONE MORE ON-TIME PLAY. THERE IS NO TIME
ON THE CLOCK. SO WE’LL BE TAKING ANOTHER
BREAK WHEN THE FIRST QUARTER IS
OFFICIALLY OVER. SO WE’LL PLAY ONE MORE
SNAP OF THE BALL HERE. AND COACH, YOU GOT TO BE
IMPRESSED WITH GLENDALE THROUGH THE FIRST QUARTER. WELL, IN TALKING TO COACH
MICHAEL BELL THROUGHOUT THE SEASON, ONE OF THE
THINGS HE LAMENTED TO ME WAS HIS LACK OF THE
DEPTH THIS YEAR. IN THE PAST GLENDALE
TYPICALLY HAS 2 AND 3 DEEP AT EVERY POSITION,
ESPECIALLY ON DEFENSE. THEY DON’T HAVE THAT
KIND OF DEPTH THIS YEAR. THE DECISION TO ELIMINATE
FOOTBALL, OBVIOUSLY, HAS HAD AN IMPACT ON THAT. AND SO WE’LL SEE HOW THEY
PERFORM AS THE HALF GOES FORWARD TOWARDS THE MIDDLE AND
END OF THE 2ND QUARTER. WORRELL, THE QUARTERBACK. AND HERE IS ROBERTS
OVER THE RIGHT SIDE. AND HE’LL PICK UP ABOUT 2. AND THAT SHOULD TAKE US
TO THE END OF QUARTER NUMBER ONE. SO ONCE AGAIN, VISITING
GLENDALE GAUCHOS LEAD IT 13-7. THIS IS MCTV SPORTS. TERRANCE ROBERTS,
5’11, 210 POUNDER. SO WE WILL SWITCH
SIDES HERE. AND ONCE AGAIN, 13-7
GLENDALE, THIS IS MCTV SPORTS. HI, EVERYONE. I’M MIKE
CAROTENUTO WITH MCTV SPORTS. AND I’M BACK FOR ANOTHER
EXCITING SEASON OF MARICOPA GRIDIRON. TUNE IN EVERY WEEK TO SEE
GAME HIGHLIGHTS AND THE FINAL SCORES FROM MESA,
SCOTTSDALE, GLENDALE, AND PHOENIX COLLEGE. FROM THE SEASON-OPENING
KICKOFF TO THE FINAL SECONDS OF THE VALLEY OF
THE SUN BOWL, WE’LL HAVE THE BEST PLAYS RIGHT
FROM THE SIDELINE. DON’T MISS THE ACTION ALL
SEASON LONG WITH MARICOPA GRIDIRON ON MCTV SPORTS. ALL RIGHT. WE’RE BACK HERE AT
JOHN D. RIGGS STADIUM, A 13-7 LEAD
FOR THE GLENDALE GAUCHOS, BUT MESA HAS THE BALL. 2ND DOWN AND 7. THE BALL RESTING AT
THEIR OWN 11-YARD LINE. TYLER WORRELL IS
TAKING OVER FOR A TRUE OUTSTANDING QUARTERBACK
IN THOMAS MACVITTIE. ROBERTS AROUND
THE RIGHT CORNER. AND HE DIDN’T
GET FAR, COACH. GOOD DEFENSE BY GLENDALE. LEADING THE CHARGE FOR THE
GLENDALE GAUCHOS 45 GAVIN STAPLEY OUT OF CACTUS
SHADOWS HIGH SCHOOL. WELL, THAT’S THIRD AND 5. AND THE LAST TIME THE
GAUCHOS HAD A 3RD AND 5 DEFENSIVELY THEY RUSHED 3
AND DROPPED 6 UNDERNEATH AND PLAYED A
TWO-DEEP COVERAGE. LET’S SEE IF THEY EMPLOY
THE SAME LOOK THIS TIME. IT LOOKS LIKES THEY’RE
BRINGING THE BLITZ WITH NUMBER 7. HODGE COMING
OFF THIS SIDE. PENALTY MARKERS DOWN,
ONE-ON-ONE COVERAGE, NEARSIDE AND GOING UP
AND MAKING A SPECTACULAR CATCH, THE WIDE
RECEIVER TREVOR RUSSELL. HE HAD ONE FOOT IN. AND THEY WILL SAY IT’S
A CATCH, BUT THERE WERE FLAGS AT THE LINE OF
SCRIMMAGE AS THE PLAY DEVELOPED. THAT WAS A GREAT
JOB BY WORRELL. HE RECOGNIZED THAT
GLENDALE HAD JUMPED OFFSIDES, SO HE TOOK THE
DEEP SHOT DOWN THE SIDE LINE. DEFENSE, PENALTY IS
DECLINED, RESULT OF THE PLAY IS A 1ST DOWN. THAT’S YOUR AARON
RODGERS PLAY. HE DOES IT ALL THE TIME
FOR THE GREEN BAY PACKERS. HE USES THE HARD COUNT. HE GETS THE DEFENSE TO
JUMP, AND THEN HE TAKES A SHOT DOWN THE FIELD. AND A GREAT, GREAT
RECEPTION THERE BY THE WIDE RECEIVER, RUSSELL. SO TREVOR RUSSELL OUT OF
CASA GRANDE HIGH SCHOOL. THAT PLAY GOES FOR 29
YARDS AND A 1ST DOWN AND NOW ROBERTS GOING TO WORK. AND HE’S INSIDE GLENDALE
TERRITORY AS HE RUNS OUT OF BOUNDS NEAR THE
48-YARD LINE INSIDE GAUCHO TERRITORY WITH 14:10 LEFT
TO GO HERE IN THE FIRST HALF. WELL, THE OUTSIDE
LINEBACKER NUMBER 32 TALBO FOR GLENDALE GOT PINNED
INSIDE, AND THAT ALLOWED ROBERTS TO GET TO THE EDGE
OF THE DEFENSE AND PICK UP THAT REALLY NICE
1ST-DOWN GAIN. THEY PLACE THE BALL AT
THE 48-YARD LINE OF THE GLENDALE GAUCHOS, WHO LEAD
IT 13-7, JUST UNDER 14 MINUTES LEFT TO GO,
FIRST HALF ACTION. WORRELL THE QUARTERBACK,
HE LOOKS OVER THE MIDDLE AND NOW TAKES
OFF, LEFT SIDE. AND HE WILL GET THE 1ST
DOWN AS HE PICKS UP ABOUT 6 ON THE PLAY AND A FRESH
SET OF DOWNS FOR GLENDALE. AND NOW YOU GOT A LATE
FLAG OVER ON THE FAR SIDE. THIS MIGHT BE GOING
AGAINST THE MESA THUNDERBIRDS. YEP. PERSONAL FOUL. NUMBER 17, 15-YARD
PENALTY, 1ST DOWN. THAT IS GUEST TYLON
PATTERSON, THE WIDE RECEIVER, PROBABLY A LATE
HIT, WOULDN’T YOU SAY, OVER ON THE FAR SIDE.
ABSOLUTELY. IT MUST HAVE
BEEN A LATE HIT. I QUIT WATCHING THE PLAY. I SAW THE QUARTERBACK
WAS WELL OUT OF BOUNDS. IT LOOKED LIKE EVERYBODY
WAS RETURNING TO THEIR APPROPRIATE SIDES. AND 17 MUST HAVE MADE
A LATE HIT ON SOMEBODY. THAT’S TOO BAD, BECAUSE IT
WAS A 1ST-DOWN SITUATION. IT STILL IS BECAUSE THE
PENALTY HAPPENED AFTER THE QUARTERBACK WORRELL
PICKED UP THE 1ST DOWN. AND NOW WE GOT AN
OFFICIAL’S TIMEOUT ON THE FIELD. BUT INSTEAD OF HAVING IT
1ST AND 10 INSIDE GLENDALE TERRITORY, NOW YOU’RE
BACK TO YOUR OWN 43. IT’S STILL 1ST AND 10. LOSE THE FIELD POSITION,
WHICH COULD COST THEM ON THE DRIVE, OBVIOUSLY. WORRELL SETTING UP A QUICK
SCREEN TO THE NEARSIDE AND TRIPPED UP ON A TREMENDOUS
DEFENSIVE PLAY BY ANDRE RICHIE, AS HE MAKES THE
TACKLE ON THE TALENTED RECEIVER SHAUN RICHARDS. WELL, YOU CALLED
IT, RICHIE MADE AN UNBELIEVABLE PLAY. HE TOOK ON THE BLOCKER. THEY HAD TWO BLOCKERS
FOR ONE GUY OUT THERE. AND HE TOOK ON THE
BLOCKER, KEPT HIS INSIDE LEVERAGE AND MADE A GREAT
OPEN-FIELD TACKLE ON THE WIDE RECEIVER. WELL, WITH THE FORWARD
PROGRESS, NO GAIN ON THE PLAY, NO LOSS. AND NOW 2ND DOWN AND 10
WITH 13 MINUTES ON THE CLOCK. WE’RE IN THE SECOND
QUARTER, VISITING GLENDALE IN THE WHITE TOPS
LEADS IT 13-7. ROBERTS TRIPPED AT
THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. THAT’S A NICE — NOT AN
ARM TACKLE, THAT WAS A HAND TACKLE BY
STEFFON CANADY. YEAH, IF CANADY DOESN’T
MAKE THAT PLAY, ROBERTS IS DEEP INTO THE
GLENDALE SECONDARY. THEY HAD THAT PLAY
BLOCKED QUITE WELL. AND GLENDALE WAS VERY
FORTUNATE THAT THE BACK WAS TRIPPED UP. THAT WILL BRING UP
A 3RD DOWN AND 6. THE LINE TO GAIN IS THE
GLENDALE 47-YARD LINE, 12:24 ON THE CLOCK. GAUCHOS UP BY 6,
OUT ON DEFENSE. AND MESA WANTS A TIMEOUT. SO THEY’LL GET ONE
WITH 12:19 LEFT TO GO. THAT IS THEIR FIRST
TIMEOUT OF THE FIRST HALF. BUT AGAIN, YOU GOT TO
REALLY LIKE WHAT YOU SEE OUT OF GLENDALE. 12:19 ON THE CLOCK, THE
GAUCHOS LEAD MESA 13-7. YOU’RE INVITED TO WATCH
BEST TAKE, WHERE YOU’LL SEE THE BEST IN FILM AND
TELEVISION PRODUCTIONS CREATED BY MARICOPA
COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS. TUNE INTO MCTV ON COX
DIGITAL 115 OR ONLINE AT MARICOPA.EDU/MCTV. WELL, BACK HERE AT
MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE. MIKE CAROTENUTO HERE. 13-7, THE GAUCHOS LEADING. AND GUYS, THESE TWO
TEAMS SPLIT LAST YEAR. THE FIRST GAME, LIKE YOU
SAID, JEFF, 66-61, MESA WINS. AND THEN GLENDALE WINS
A CLOSE ONE, 35-24 . SO I HAVE TO GUESS 13-7
RIGHT NOW WITH AT 12:19 LEFT TO GO IN THE HALF. COACH, I’M THINKING
PROBABLY A 50-POINT GAME; RIGHT? WELL, I NEVER LIKED THOSE
KINDS OF GAMES UNTIL I BECAME AN OFFENSIVE
COORDINATOR. I NEVER REALLY
LIKED THEM AT ALL. SO I LIKE THE
LOWER-SCORING GAMES. SO A BIG PLAY
HERE FOR MESA. 3RD DOWN AND 6. AND ROBERTS AROUND THE
RIGHT EDGE HAS THE 1ST DOWN. AND WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS
YOUNG MAN IS HE GETS IT TO THE 40-YARD LINE. AND PICKS UP CLOSE TO 13
YARDS ON THAT PLAY, COACH. THIS IS A YOUNG MAN,
HE JUST DOESN’T STOP AT CONTACT. NO, HE’S GOT GREAT
PAD LEVEL ON IMPACT. AND HE KEEPS THOSE LEGS
CHURNING, BUT THE KEY TO THAT PLAY WAS BREWINGTON,
THE SLOT RECEIVER, NUMBER 3, GOT A GREAT BLOCK ON
THE OUTSIDE LINEBACKER AND REALLY OPENED UP A BIG
SEAM UP THE RIGHT SIDE. THIS DRIVE STARTED BACK
AT THE MESA 8-YARD LINE. THIS IS THE 9TH
PLAY OF THE DRIVE. AND A FRESH SET OF DOWNS
WITH 11:45 AND COUNTING ON THE CLOCK,
2ND-QUARTER ACTION. WELL, HOLD ON. WE GOT A PLENTY MARKER
COMING BACK WHERE THE SAFETIES HANG OUT. AND I’M A LITTLE PERPLEXED
WHAT THIS CALL MIGHT BE. DELAY OF GAME, OFFENSE,
5-YARD PENALTY, 1ST DOWN. RYAN FELKER ARGUING. SO A DELAY OF GAME
PUSHES THEM BACK 5 AT THE GLENDALE 45-YARD LINE,
11:35 ON THE CLOCK. THE DEFENSE, GLENDALE,
THEY LEAD IT 13-7. 1ST AND 15. TO THE AIR WORRELL
WITH LOTS OF TIME. AND HE FIRES COMPLETE. A NICE THROWING CATCH TO
PATTERSON AND THAT BALL IS GOING TO BE STRIPPED AWAY
BY GLENDALE AND RASHIE HODGE. HE’LL RETURN IT UP TO
MIDFIELD AND (INAUDIBLE). ARE THEY GOING TO
RULE THEM DOWN? THIS MAY VERY WELL
BE MESA’S BALL. WHAT A WILD PLAY, MY WORD. THAT’S THE 10TH TAKE AWAY FOR
HODGE ON THE SEASON. INCREDIBLE. WOW. THE GUY IS AROUND
THE BALL ALWAYS. WELL, IT WAS A
LEGITIMATE CATCH. GREAT STRIP THERE BY
NUMBER 34 FOR THE GAUCHOS. AND THAT’S THE
LINEBACKER KHALID WALKER. HE REALLY PULLED IT OUT OF
THE THERE, THE FRESHMAN. AND HODGE WAS ABLE
TO GET ON THE BALL. BUT I DON’T KNOW, I THINK
GLENDALE GOT LUCKY ON THAT ONE. LET’S SEND IT
DOWNSTAIRS TO MIKE. COACH, YOU’RE ONE HUNDRED
PERCENT RIGHT, THEY DID GET A LITTLE BIT
LUCKY ON THAT ONE. BUT HODGE IS JUST A
TURNOVER MAGNET AGAINST THIS MESA TEAM. HE ACTUALLY PICKED OFF
MACVITTIE THE FIRST TIME THEY PLAYED EARLIER IN
THE SEASON LAST MONTH. SO HODGE WITH ANOTHER
TURNOVER FOR THE GAUCHOS. HERE IS CARTER
GOING TO WORK. YEAH, MACVITTIE WHO
HAD SUCH A SENSATIONAL OPENING. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE
QUARTERBACK IN MESA, HAD A SENSATIONAL OPENING WEEK
AGAINST PHOENIX COLLEGE. AND THEN WENT OVER TO
GLENDALE AND TURNED IT OVER 3 TIMES. THEY WON CONVINCINGLY
IN THAT GAME, 56-19. BUT THIS GLENDALE DEFENSE
OBVIOUSLY PUTS SOME PRESSURE ON THAT FORMER
DIVISION I QUARTERBACK. 2ND DOWN AND 11. GLENDALE WITH THE BALL. NOW INSIDE THEIR OWN
TERRITORY AT THE 49-YARD LINE. LEADING IT 13 TO 7. AND THE PASS IS
GOING TO BE COMPLETE. THAT’S THE 4TH CATCH THIS
EVENING BY THAT TIGHT END. AND THERE HE IS PAUWELS,
RAYMOND PAUWELS 6’4, 250 OUT OF MILLENNIUM
HIGH SCHOOL. YEAH, UNFORTUNATELY FOR
PAUWELS, THE BALL WAS NOT THROWN WHERE HE COULD
CATCH AND RUN AFTER THE CATCH. HE HAD TO MAKE A DIVING
ATTEMPT TO SECURE THAT BALL. SO THAT’S GOING TO
BRING UP A 3RD AND 5. BOB BOXLEY IS A OUR PUBLIC
ADDRESS ANNOUNCER TONIGHT. HE HAS BEEN WITH THIS MESA
PROGRAM FOR MANY YEARS AND ONE OF THE TRUE GOOD GUYS
IN THE BUSINESS, AND HE DOES A GREAT JOB. 3RD DOWN AND 5. PLAY-ACTION PASS, HERE’S
A LONG THROW, AND LORENCE OFF THE MARK, AS HE TRIED
TO HOOK UP THAT TIME WITH BRIAN SMITH, WHO SCORED ON
A 31-YARD TOUCHDOWN PASS BACK EARLIER
IN THE QUARTER. I THOUGHT THAT WAS A VERY
WELL-DESIGNED PLAY BY THE GAUCHOS. THEY GOT A GREAT PLAY-ACTION
FAKE TO THE TAILBACK. EVERYBODY BID
EXCEPT THE CORNER. THE CORNER WAS
IN MAN COVERAGE. AND LORENCE THROWS
A GOOD BALL THERE. AND GAUCHOS HAVE A
ANOTHER BIG GAIN. SO IT BRINGS UP
4TH DOWN AND 5. PUNTING UNIT IS OUT. AND THEN PAUWELS GETS IT
INSIDE THE 7, BUT IT DID NOT TAKE A
GLENDALE BOUNCE. THAT WILL BE A TOUCHBACK. AND SO THE MESA
THUNDERBIRDS WILL SEND THEIR OFFENSE BACK
OUT ON THE FIELD. AND, YOU KNOW, JEFF, I
THINK MESA GOT A BREAK RIGHT THERE, BECAUSE I
THINK THEY STILL HAD 12 MEN ON THE FIELD WHEN
THAT BALL GOT SNAPPED. THE 12 PLAYERS FOR MESA
WAS STILL, IT LOOKED LIKE TO ME, RUNNING TO THE
SIDELINES, BUT THE OFFICIALS LET IT SLIDE. BIG A SERIES
HERE IN THE GAME. MESA HAS NOT BEEN ABLE
TO SUSTAIN THEIR DRIVES. THE ONLY SCORE THEY’VE,
THEY WERE SET UP WITH A 5-YARD DRIVE, THE BALL
INSIDE THE 5-YARD LINE FOR THE THUNDERBIRDS. SO LET’S SEE IF MESA CAN
GET SOME CONTINUITY AND KEEP THIS BALL MOVING
DOWN THE FIELD. TYLER WORRELL RETURNS AT
THE HELM OF THIS OFFENSE. HE WILL HANDOFF TO ROBERTS
TRYING TO FIND A CUT-BACK LANE. AND HE DIDN’T
GET VERY MUCH. AND A NICE JOB THERE. AND A COUPLE OF THE GUYS
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PILE FOR GLENDALE, LED BY
DERRICK GRAY AND ALSO IN ON THE TACKLE WAS
JACOB FRANKLIN. YEAH, FRANKLIN CAME BACK
FROM THE BACKSIDE AND WAS ABLE TO FINISH
OFF THE PLAY. I DON’T REALLY LIKE HOW
GLENDALE IS ADJUSTING TO THIS TRIPS FORMATION
THAT MESA IS USING. LOOK FOR MESA TO COME BACK
THROUGH TO A 3-RECEIVER SIDE, LIKE YOU SEE IT
RIGHT HERE, BECAUSE GLENDALE IS ONLY PUTTING
DEFENDERS IN THE SHORT AREA THERE. I’D RATHER GET ANOTHER
DEFENDER PARTWAY WALKED OUT TO COVER NUMBER 3. THEY’RE DOING A BETTER JOB
HERE ON THIS SITUATION. 9 MINUTES LEFT TO GO
HERE IN THE FIRST HALF. AND OUR FIRST LOOK AT
THE MESA TIGHT END, MATT RORING, 6’5, 233
POUNDER OUT OF UTAH. AND THAT’S GOOD
FOR ABOUT 3 MORE. THAT’S WHAT I WAS
TALKING ABOUT, JEFF. THE INSIDE LINEBACKER
THERE ON THE THAT PARTICULAR PLAY, THAT WAS
NUMBER 33, ROBERT WESTBROOK, HE ADJUSTED
MORE TO THE TRIPS RECEIVER. AND HE WAS ABLE TO HIT THE
RECEIVER JUST AS HE CAUGHT THE BALL TO PREVENT
ANY RUN AFTER A CATCH. 8:28 AND COUNTING,
FIRST HALF ACTION. GLENDALE ALMOST
JUMPED OFFSIDES THERE. AND NOW YOU GOT A FEW
CHANGES HERE IN THE FORMATION. WORRELL THE QUARTERBACK,
6’3, 196 POUNDS OUT OF NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN
HIGH SCHOOL. HERE’S ROBERTS
GOING TO WORK. AND HE’S UP TO THE 26. NO GAIN ON THE PLAY. AND WHAT A FANTASTIC JOB. THERE FINISHING THE
DEFENSIVELY WAS THE SAFETY ANDRE RICHIE. YEAH, I THOUGHT ROBERTS
WAS GOING TO BREAK THAT OFF FOR A 1ST DOWN. HE MADE THE FIRST MAN
MISS TWO YARDS DEEP IN HIS OWN BACKFIELD, BUT THE
GREAT PURSUIT BY THE GAUCHOS KEPT THAT
TO MINIMAL GAIN. AND ANOTHER GREAT A SERIES
FOR THE GLENDALE DEFENSE. GLENDALE LEADS
IT 13-7, 7:40. JARED STANGLER AVERAGING
43.3 YARDS PER KICK. THIS ONE IS GOING TO SEND
THE RETURN MAN ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE GLENDALE
27-YARD LINE. AND THAT WAS A 46-YARD
PUNT, NO RETURN. ANDREW BANKS WAS A LITTLE
NERVOUS ON THAT ONE. BACK PEDDLING TO CATCH A
PUNT IS NOT AN EASY THING TO DO. IT IS NOT. AND THE HANG TIME THAT STANGLER
HAD WAS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE. OH, HE’S AN
IMPRESSIVE PUNTER. HE’S — I BELIEVE HE’S THE
SON OF A FOOTBALL COACH IN THE WEST SIDE. AND I’M CAN’T — JASON
STANGLER AT WILLOW CANYON. I COULDN’T REMEMBER
THE HIGH SCHOOL. I KNEW IT WAS A WEST
VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL, BUT I COULDN’T REMEMBER
WHICH ONE. WE SHOT FOR
THEM THIS YEAR. AND THEY LOST LAST
NIGHT AT VERADO BY 10. AND DID NOT MAKE
THE PLAYOFFS. BUT THAT’S THE FIRST YEAR
FOR COACH STANGLER IN A THAT PROGRAM. AND THEY’RE TRYING TO
TURN THINGS AROUND. AND I THINK THEY
DID THIS YEAR. SO THE RUN GOES, MESA
STEPPING IT UP WAS ERIC MARSH, A 6’2, 237 POUNDER
FROM ONE OF THE POWER TEAMS IN THE WEST VALLEY,
DESERT EDGE HIGH SCHOOL IN GOODYEAR. WELL, YOU CAN SEE A
DIFFERENCE RIGHT NOW IN THE MESA DEFENSE. THEY’RE NOT RESPECTING THE
QUARTERBACK RUN LIKE THEY DID EARLIER WHEN NGUYEN
WAS HEALTHY AND IN THE GAME AT QUARTERBACK. AND THEIR PURSUIT HAS
BEEN MUCH BETTER TO STOP THE TAILBACK, AND WE’LL
SEE IF THAT’S CONSISTENT THE REST OF THIS GAME. HANDOFF, CARTER, SLIPS
A TACKLE NEAR THE 35. WELL, IT LOOKS LIKE HE’S
GOING TO BE OUT OF BOUNDS, SHY OF THE LINE TO GAIN. I THOUGHT MAYBE HE GOT IT. YEAH, HE GOT SPUN AROUND. HE GOT FORWARD PROGRESS,
BUT THEN HE GOT SPUN BACKWARDS. AND IT’S GOING TO BE
INTERESTING TO SEE WHERE THEY MARK THIS, AND IT
LOOKS LIKE THE LINESMEN IS MARKING THAT IT IS A 1ST
DOWN AND THEY’RE BRINGING THE CHAINS FORWARD. YEAH, I THOUGHT THAT WAS
AN UNUSUAL SPOT THAT TIME AFTER AN 11-YARD
PICK UP BY CARTER. WELL, THEY GOT GOOD
FORWARD PROGRESS, BUT HE GOT THROWN AROUND AND
SPUN AROUND BACKWARDS. AND I WASN’T SURE WHERE
THEY WOULD MARK THAT. THAT WAS KIND OF AN
UNUSUAL SITUATION. AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE
CHAIN GANG IS HAVING SOME ISSUES OVER THERE ON THAT
SIDELINE GETTING THINGS SET. MICHAEL BELL IS THE HEAD
COACH OF THE GLENDALE GAUCHOS. GLENDALE 1ST DOWN AND 10
FROM THEIR OWN 37-YARD LINE. THEY LEAD BY 6. AND THE HANDOFF GOES,
CARTER TRYING TO BREAK TO THE LEFT SIDE. AND HE RUNS
INTO SONI FONUA. TREMENDOUS PLAY, BUT
IT WAS A BROKEN PLAY BY GLENDALE ON THE OFFENSE. WELL, IT WAS A POOR
JOB BY THE QUARTERBACK. THE QUARTERBACK
HANDED THE BALL OFF. AND HE’S SUPPOSED TO
FAKE AROUND THE LEFT END. AND HE DIDN’T
MAKE A HARD FAKE. AND HE COULD HAVE PUT
HIMSELF IN POSITION TO GET A BLOCK FOR HIS RUNNING
BACK BECAUSE OF THE CUT BACK BY THE TAILBACK. BUT I WAS DISAPPOINTED
WITH THE KIND OF FAKING USED BY THE QUARTERBACK
ON THAT PARTICULAR PLAY. SO WE’RE DOWN TO 6 MINUTES
LEFT TO GO HERE IN THE FIRST HALF. GLENDALE WITH A 13-7 LEAD
3, 2, 1 ON THE PLAY CLOCK. DID HE GET IT OFF? NO FLAGS. AND TO THE AIR IS GLENDALE, AND
IS IT’S INCOMPLETE. I’M NOT REALLY SURE WHY IN
THE WORLD BRIAN SMITH HAD THE BALL IN HIS HAND AND
HE LITERALLY JUST THREW IT AWAY. WELL, I THINK HE HEARD
SOME FOOTSTEPS COMING FROM THE OTHER SAFETY THAT WAS
MOVING IN — ACTUALLY IT WAS A CORNER, I BELIEVE,
MOVING IN FROM THE OTHER SIDE. I DIDN’T LIKE THE THROW. IT HUNG UP IN THE
AIR WAY TOO LONG. IT KIND OF HUNG THE
RECEIVER OUT TO DRY. LORENCE NEEDS TO BE MORE
DECISIVE AND PUT THE BALL ON THE RECEIVER’S BODY. WE USED TO PLAY THAT AS
KIDS WITH THE GUYS WE DID NOT LIKE IN THE
NEIGHBORHOOD. HANG THEM OUT THE DRY. 3RD AND 12 FROM
THE 35-YARD LINE. AND WE’RE GOING TO GET A
TIMEOUT HERE BY — WELL, OH. CHECK THAT. DELAY OF GAME. YEAH, I HAVEN’T BEEN
PLEASED WITH LORENCE’S RHYTHM OUT HERE
WITH THE OFFENSE. HE’S JUST TOO SLOW. THIS IS A VERY
SMART YOUNG MAN. HE WAS A 4.0 OR BETTER STUDENT
COMING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL. HE NEEDS TO GET THE TEMPO
MOVING FOR THIS OFFENSE SO THEY CAN GET
THIS THING GOING. ELIJAH LORENCE, 6’1, 195,
OUT OF MOUNTAIN RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL, ANOTHER
WEST SIDE TEAM. 5:45 ON THE CLOCK. GLENDALE LEADS IT 13-7. LORENCE TO THE AIR. HE’S IN TROUBLE
AND DOWN HE GOES. HE IS GOING TO BE SACKED
FIRST IN THERE FOR MESA WAS JORDAN TALAFILI, A
6’5, 330 POUNDER OUT OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON. YEAH, THAT WAS A GREAT
RUSH BY TALAFILI, DEFEATED THE OFFENSIVE GUARD’S
BLOCK AND WAS ALL OVER THE QUARTERBACK. BUT GLENDALE DOESN’T HAVE
THE STYLE OF OFFENSE WHERE THEY CAN CONVERT
THESE 3RD AND LONGS. THEY’VE GOT TO KEEP
THE BALL IN PLAY-ACTION SITUATION SO THEY CAN RUN
AND PASS OPTIONS AND DO A BETTER JOB ON
1ST AND 2ND DOWN. AND THE PUNT IS AWAY. AND THIS ONE IS PROBABLY,
WELL, ALMOST A SHANK PUNT. AND THE OFFICIALS ARE
MARKING IT OFF BACK INSIDE GLENDALE TERRITORY. AND NOW THEY’RE GOING TO
MARK IT AT THE GLENDALE 45-YARD LINE, SO
A 15-YARD PUNT. SO MESA HAS TURNED THE
MOMENTUM IN THEIR FAVOR. NOW THE ISSUE IS, CAN
THEY CONVERT A DRIVE? THEY HAVEN’T SO FAR
TONIGHT, BUT THIS IS THE BEST FIELD POSITION BY
FAR THAT THEY’VE HAD. THE FIRST TIME I BELIEVE
THAT THEY’VE HAD IT TO START ON THE PLUS
SIDE OF THE 50. 5:21 LEFT TO GO HERE IN
THE FIRST HALF, GLENDALE WITH A 13-7 LEAD, AS MESA
NOW SETS UP THEIR OFFENSE, SINGLE BACK IS TJ ROBERTS. AND HE WILL — NO, THEY’LL
RUN THE OPTION AROUND THE LEFT EDGE AND THE LATE
PITCH, AS THEY GO TO THE SPEEDSTER SHAUN RICHARDS,
DOWN INSIDE THE 10. THAT WAS A BEAUTIFULLY
EXECUTED OPTION PLAY. YOU DON’T SEE THAT KIND OF
PLAY TOO MUCH ANYMORE, BUT THAT WAS WELL DONE BY
WORRELL, ATTACKING THE PERIMETER OF THE DEFENSE. YOU WATCH HIM RIGHT HERE
AND THEN HE PITCHES LATE. AND THE SPEEDSTER TAKES
IT DOWN THE SIDELINE, MR. RICHARDS, AND PUTS
THEM GOAL TO GO TERRITORY AT THE 8-YARD LINE. THAT WAS 17 — I’M SORRY,
A 37-YARD RUN THAT TIME. AND MOST OF IT BELONGS
TO SHAUN RICHARDS, A 5’8 COMPETITOR OUT OF MARCOS
DE NIZA HIGH SCHOOL. SO A FRESH SET OF DOWNS. IT’S GOAL TO GO. HERE IS RICHARDS GOING
BACK TO WORK AROUND THE LEFT EDGE, AND
THEN HE LOOKED UP. AND HE GOT ANNIHILATED
NEAR THE 5. THERE WAS A WALL OF
GAUCHOS WAITING FOR HIM. THEY BLOCKED IT WELL
AT THE POINT OF ATTACK INITIALLY, BUT THE GOOD
PURSUIT BY THE GLENDALE DEFENSE SHUT IT DOWN RIGHT
THERE ABOUT THE 4-YARD LINE. IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS
WESTBROOK THAT MIGHT HAVE INITIATED THE FIRST
HIT, HARD TO TELL. YEAH, I THINK
YOU’RE RIGHT. ROBERT WESTBROOK, 33,
GOT OVER THERE AND MADE A REALLY SOLID FORM TACKLE. SO NOW FROM THE 4
IT’S GOAL TO GO. AND YOU GOT SOME OF
THOSE BIG LINEMAN, ANGEL VERDOZA, 6’6, 310
OUT CESAR CHAVEZ. HE WEARS NUMBER 72 FOR THE
MESA OFFENSIVE FRONT LINE. HANDOFF ROBERTS,
TRYING TO CUT IT BACK. AND IT WAS A HAND TACKLE
BY HODGE, WHICH SLOWED HIM DOWN ENOUGH FOR HIM TO
GET TACKLED RIGHT AT THE 1-YARD LINE. YEAH, THEY DID A NICE JOB
BLOCKING THAT FRONT WALL, BECAUSE THEY
WERE A MAN SHORT. GLENDALE IS OUT THERE
PLAYING STRAIGHT-MAN COVERAGE. AND THEY HAD JAMMED
THE BOX, BUT THE MESA OFFENSIVE FRONT WAS ABLE
TO PUSH THE DEFENDERS BACK INTO THEIR OWN END ZONE
AND BRING UP THAT 3RD AND 1. GOAL TO GO, WITH 3:33 LEFT
TO GO HERE IN THE FIRST HALF. ROBERTS GETS
THE CALL AGAIN. AND HE’S GOING
TO BE STOPPED. AND COACH, YOU CAN’T ASK
ANYMORE OUT OF JACOB FRANKLIN THAN THAT. YOUNG MAN, WELL COACHED
IN HIS HIGH SCHOOL DAYS, PLAYED FOR DICK TAYLOR OVER
AT CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL. AND HE MADE A PHENOMENAL
PLAY TO BRING UP A 4TH AND GOAL FROM THE 2. YEAH, IT LOOKS LIKE COACH
FELKER IS KEEPING HIS OFFENSE ON THE FIELD. I WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED IF
WE GET ONE OF THOSE SAME ACTIONS IN THE
QUARTERBACK. KEEP IT ON THE PERIMETER
WITH A RUN-PASS OPTION TO THE NEARSIDE OF THE FIELD. AS MESA LOOKS TO
TIE THINGS UP. AND THEY WILL GIVE
IT BACK TO ROBERTS. HE IS GOING TO BE STUFFED
BEHIND THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. AND CANADY HAS HAD A
HUGE GAME HERE, THE 225 SOPHOMORE OUT OF
APOLLO HIGH SCHOOL. WELL, THAT REALLY SHOCKED
ME THAT THEY WENT TO THE RUN. THE 4TH TIME DOWN THERE
INSIDE THE 10-YARD LINE. GLENDALE REALLY STIFFENED
UP ON THE LAST TWO PLAYS. AND I THOUGHT FOR SURE
COACH FELKER WOULD GO WITH SOME PLAY ACTION
ON THAT ONE. SO 2:52 LEFT TO PLAY
HERE IN THE FIRST HALF. IT’S 13-7, VISITING GLENDALE,
YOU SEE THEIR SIDELINE. WHAT A TREMENDOUS
JOB BY CANADY. THE PLAY BEFORE THAT
OUTSTANDING BY JACOB FRANKLIN. THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A
KEY PLAY FOR THAT GLENDALE DEFENSE — IT WAS A KEY
PLAY FOR THAT GLENDALE DEFENSE. ABSOLUTELY. SO NOW THEY START AT THEIR
OWN 5-YARD LINE AND JUST TRYING TO GET SOME
BREATHING ROOM HERE. AND THEY’RE GOING TO
TAKE A LOSS ON THAT PLAY. SEE NOW THIS IS WHERE IF
I’M GLENDALE, I’M USING MY COMING-OUT OFFENSE. AND A COMING-OUT OFFENSE
IS A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN YOUR REGULAR OFFENSE. I’M NOT SURE WHAT THEIR
APPROACH IS, BUT MY APPROACH USED TO BE,
WHATEVER YOU USE ON THE GOAL LINE, WE USE THE
SAME OFFENSE COMING OUT. THEY DID A NICE JOB
EARLIER GETTING IN TWO TIGHT ENDS TO SCORE ONE
OF THEIR EARLY TOUCHDOWNS, BUT THEY’RE STAYING JUST
IN THE ONE-TIGHT END FORMATION RIGHT NOW. WE’RE DOWN TO 2:15,
HANDOFF, IT WAS GIVEN TO CARTER IN THE END ZONE, AND HE
DIDN’T GET ANYTHING. I THINK WE’RE GOING
TO GET A TIMEOUT. WHAT A FINE PLAY THERE,
AARON AUELUA, 6’3, 319, OUT OF GILBERT ARIZONA
HIGHLAND HIGH SCHOOL. AND A TIMEOUT
TAKEN BY MESA. THEY HAVE ONE LEFT. GLENDALE HAS ALL 3. WITH 2:09 LEFT TO GO HERE
IN THE FIRST HALF AND GLENDALE LEADS IT 13-7. OUR AWARDING-WINNING
FACULTY IS COMMITTED TO STUDENT SUCCESS
ON CAMPUS AND OFF. YOU’RE WATCHING CHANNEL 115,
MARICOPA COLLEGES TELEVISION. ALL RIGHT. WE’RE BACK HERE AT JOHN D. BRIGGS STADIUM ON THE
CAMPUS OF MESA COMMUNITY COLLEGE ON HOMECOMING
NIGHT FOR THE THUNDERBIRDS. AND IT HAS BEEN A
STRUGGLE OFFENSIVELY. THEY’RE LOOKING AT A 3RD
DOWN AND 12 WITH THE BALL RESTING, AS YOU CAN SEE ON
THE NEAR HASHMARKS AT THE MESA — OR CHECK THAT,
GLENDALE AT THEIR OWN 3-YARD LINE. TO THE AIR OUT
OF THE END ZONE. AND ANOTHER CATCH BY
PAUWELS, THAT’S A 1ST DOWN. HE’S STILL ON HIS FEET AND
HE’S GOING TO BE WRAPPED UP NEAR THE 38-YARD
LINE, 35 YARDS. I’LL TELL YOU WHAT,
PAUWELS IS A GAME CHANGER. YEAH, HE’S A BIG-TIME
PLAYER, NO DOUBT. NO DOUBT. I REALLY LIKE THE DESIGN
OF THE PLAY THERE. THEY GOT THE BACK SWINGING
UP THE SIDELINE, THEY THREW BOTH THE OUTSIDE
LINEBACKER AND CORNER ON THE RUNNING BACK AND THAT
LEFT PAUWELS ONE ON ONE INSIDE. AND HE’S SUCH
A BIG TARGET. AND THAT WAS THE BEST
THROW OF THE NIGHT SO FAR FROM LORENCE. HE REALLY PUT THAT BALL
ON HIS NUMBERS AND ALLOWED HIM TO RUN
AFTER THE CATCH. ON 1ST DOWN AND MESA BLOWS
THAT ONE UP ON A FINE PLAY DEFENSIVELY,
SONI FONUA ONCE AGAIN. WE’RE DOWN TO UNDER A
MINUTE AND 30 SECONDS. GLENDALE IS NOT
USING A TIMEOUT. THEY’RE PROBABLY GOING TO
SEE HOW THEY DO HERE ON 2ND DOWN BEFORE THEY
DECIDE WHETHER THEY’RE GOING TO USE ANY
OF THEIR TIMEOUTS. THEY DON’T WANT TO ALLOW
MESA TO GET BACK ON THE FIELD WITH THEIR
EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE. LOSS OF TWO,
2ND DOWN AND 12. 1:10 ON THE CLOCK HERE. 2ND QUARTER ACTION. AND CARTER TAKING OFF
AROUND THE RIGHT EDGE. HE’S GOING TO GAIN ABOUT
9, BUT THERE IS A PENALTY MAKER BACK BEHIND THE
LINE OF SCRIMMAGE. WE AWAIT THE ENSUING CALL. THIS IS A BIG CALL HERE. SO IT LOOKS LIKE THEY’RE
TALKING TO COACH BELL. SO IT MUST BE ON MESA. SO IT’S GOING TO BE EITHER
A 3RD DOWN AND 3 OR YOU TAKE THE PENALTY AND
GET THE DOWN OVER. COACH BELL IS ON THE UPPER
LEFT-HAND CORNER OF YOUR SCREEN HERE. OFFSIDES, DEFENSE NUMBER
11, 5-YARD PENALTY, REPLAY 2ND DOWN. SO HE’S GOING TO
TAKE THE DOWN. ALL RIGHT. LET’S SEND IT BACK
DOWNSTAIRS TO MICHAEL. HEY, THANKS A LOT, JEFF. COACH, YOU’RE A TALKING
A LOT ABOUT RAYM PAUWELS. I SAW THIS KID PLAY
PLAY AT MILLENNIUM. HIS JUNIOR YEAR HE PUT UP
SOME RIDICULOUS NUMBERS, BUT THE PROBLEM WITH HIS
SENIOR YEAR, AND AGAIN, I DON’T KNOW ALL ABOUT HIS
RECRUITMENT, BUT HE WAS DOUBLE AND TRIPLE
TEAMED CONSTANTLY. ALTHOUGH, I DIDN’T KNOW
HE COULD PUNT AS WELL. AND YOU SEE THE FREAKISH
ATHLETIC NUMBER 83 HE IS GLENDALE. LORENCE IN TROUBLE, BEING
PURSUED, AND HE ALMOST HAS HIS HEAD TAKEN OFF
AT THE 40-YARD LINE. AMONGST THE TACKLERS WAS
JAQUAN BEAVER AND BIG 91 TALAFILI, 329
POUNDS OF HIM. BOY, I’M TELLING YOU,
GLENDALE IS LUCKY THEY DIDN’T LOSE A SECONDND
QUARTERBACK THERE. YEAH, THEY PUT A LICK
ON HIM, THAT’S FOR SURE. AND IT LOOK LIKE COACH
BELL IS GOING VERY CONSERVATIVE HERE AND JUST
RUNNING THE CLOCK DOWN. THEY’RE PROBABLY GOING TO
USE A TIMEOUT BEFORE THEY CALL THIS PARTICULAR PLAY. THERE IS 4 SECONDS BETWEEN
THE PLAY CLOCK AND THE GAME CLOCK. AND THERE’S THE TIMEOUT,
GLENDALE’S FIRST. THEY’VE GOT TWO LEFT. WITH 6 SECONDS
LEFT TO PLAY HERE. AND THIS SHOULD BE BARRING
A DEFENSIVE PENALTY, THE FINAL PLAY OF THE FIRST
HALF HERE AS THE GLENDALE GAUCHOS COMING INTO
HOSTILE TERRITORY, AND THEY HAVE MAINTAINED THIS
LEAD FOR THE MOST PART 13-7. WELL, INTERESTING
SITUATION HERE. YOU GOT 6 SECONDS
LEFT ON THE CLOCK. YOU COULD GO FOR IT RIGHT
HERE, JUST MAX PROTECT AND THROW A DEEP BALL
DOWN THE FIELD. YOU GOT A TALL WIDE
RECEIVER IN SMITH. LET HIM GO MAKE A PLAY AND
THEN END THE HALF OR TAKE A KNEE. SO WE’LL SEE WHAT THE
GLENDALE GAUCHOS HAVE UP THEIR SLEEVE HERE WITH
6 SECONDS LEFT TO GO. THEY’RE LOOKING AT A 3RD
DOWN AND 8 FROM THEIR OWN 40-YARD LINE. AND MESA IS PREPARED
FOR THE DEEP BALL. THEY’RE MOVING WAY BACK
WITH BOTH THEIR SAFETIES AND THE CORNERS. AND THEY COME OUT RUNNING
THE BALL WITH CARTER. AND CARTER OVER
THE RIGHT SIDE. HE’LL GET IT TO THE 44. AND THAT SHOULD TAKE
US TO THE LOCKER ROOM. BRING OUT THE BAND. IT’S HALFTIME. GLENDALE ON THE ROAD
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS HERE IN THE FIRST HALF
AGAINST A TOUGH MESA THUNDERBIRDS TEAM. AND THEY LEAD IT
TO A SCORE OF 13-7. LET’S SEND IT — SO YOU
TALK ABOUT THIS REAL QUICK, YOU TALK ABOUT HOW
SUCCESSFUL GLENDALE WAS IN THAT FIRST HALF. THEY HAVE REALLY
STRUGGLED. THEY CAME IN HERE
WITH A RECORD OF 1-7. AND BOY, THEY — IT MIGHT
BE ONE OF THEIR BEST FIRST HALF — HALF OF
FOOTBALL ALL SEASON. WELL, DEFENSIVELY, THEY’VE
PLAYED EXTREMELY WELL. OFFENSIVELY THEY’VE BEEN
A LITTLE INCONSISTENT. OF COURSE, LOSING THE
STARTING QUARTERBACK, THEY HAD A REALLY GOOD GAME
PLAN FOR NGUYEN, MASON NGUYEN, THE GREAT
RUNNING QUARTERBACK. AND WHEN HE GOES DOWN, THEY HAD
TO MAKE SOME ADJUSTMENTS. AND SO IT’S BEEN A LITTLE
MORE DIFFICULT FOR THEM OFFENSIVELY. WELL, ALL RIGHT. LET’S SEND IT DOWNSTAIRS
TO MIKE CAROTENUTO. HEY, THANKS A LOT. WELL, COACH BELL,
OBVIOUSLY A 13-7 LEAD, I KNOW TERRANCE ROBERTS
JR. THE FIRST GAME YOU AGAINST YOU
HAD A BIG GAME. THAT DEFENSIVE LINE, YOU
MADE A HECK OF AN EFFORT — JUST KIND OF — AT
LEAST TRYING TO CONTAIN HIM. YEAH, WE’RE
PLAYING BETTER. HE’S A GREAT BACK. YOU KNOW, HE LED THE
LEAGUE IN LAST YEAR. AND HE A GOOD BACK. WE’RE TRYING TO DO OUR
BEST TO KEEP HIM IN FRONT OF US. WITH THEIR QUARTERBACK,
THEIR STARTER BEING OUT, WE DIDN’T KNOW
WHAT TO EXPECT. WE KIND OF THOUGHT THEY’D
TRY TO RUN THE BALL AND PULL THE SCREEN GAME,
WHICH THEY’RE REALLY GOOD AT. SO WE’RE JUST TRYING TO
KEEP THEM IN FRONT OF US. YOU KNOW, WE MUFFED A PUNT
AND THAT DIDN’T HELP US DOWN THERE ON THE 3-YARD
LINE OR WHATEVER IT WAS. BUT OTHER THAN THAT, GUYS
HAVE COME OUT TO PLAY TODAY, SO IT’S
A GOOD GAME. AND THEN ON THE OFFENSIVE
LINE IT SEEMS LIKE YOU GUYS — THEY’RE
GETTING GOOD PUSHING. AND IT SEEMS LIKE YOU
HAVE HAD KIND OF A FEW BREAKDOWNS, BUT THE
BREAKDOWNS HAVE BEEN ON SO THAT’S KIND OF HELPED
OUT TOO, BUT HOW WOULD YOU SAY YOUR OFFENSIVE
LINE PLAY IS? UP TO THIS POINT,
THEY’RE GOOD UP FRONT. AND THEY’RE PRESSURING US
AND BLITZING THE GAP, YOU KNOW, HITTING — THEIR
TIMING IS REALLY GOOD, WHEN THEY BLITZ. QUARTERBACK HAS MADE A
COUPLE OF REALLY GOOD PLAYS TO REALLY GET OF THE
TROUBLE THERE, BUT, YOU KNOW, SHOOT THERE,
GET UP FRONT. SO WE JUST GOT TO KEEP
PLAYING HARD ANOTHER HALF. AND WE’LL SEE HOW IT GOES. A LOT DIFFERENT
THAN THE FIRST GAME. GOOD LUCK IN
THE SECOND HALF. THANK YOU. THAT’S COACH MICHAEL BELL
TAKING OFF 13-7, THE LEAD — THE GAUCHOS
LEAD AT THE HALF. GOT MORE HALFTIME
ENTERTAINMENT COMING UP FOR YOU HERE
ON MCTV SPORTS.
